Discovering Kerala: A Journey Through Tea Estates, Backwaters🌴, and Beaches🌊

Journey Through Paradise: From Nagpur to Kerala

As the train started chugging out of Nagpur station, I felt a current inside my veins as I got filled with excitement. Before me lay a passage from the buzzing Maharashtra to the serene landscapes of Kerala. Little could I have imagined that this trip would turn out to be one of my lifetime journeys, weaving together moments of wonder, peace, and pure enjoyment.

Our road south wound through great stretches of green forests and fruitful fields. Indian countryside passed with an ease that made time lag. Hours changed into days and the wail of the wheels on tracks lulled me into a slumber. When I eventually opened my eyes, the landscape outside had dramatically changed.

As far as the eye could see, tea plantations covered rolling hills whose emerald-green foliage sparkled in the sunlight. And there we were, at Munnar, the tea capital of Kerala. I stepped off the train and immediately mountain air hit my lungs, filling me with excitement with whatever lies ahead.

"Steeped in Serenity: Exploring Munnar Tea Gardens"

Our journey began in Munnar, a hill station nestled in the Western Ghats mountains. Munnar, perched high above sea level, offered breathtaking vistas of rolling hills and vast expanses of tea plantations. With a leisurely stroll through the lush tea gardens our journey went on. As we wound our way up the rolling hills, the landscape transformed before our eyes. Verdant tea plantations stretch out so far and so wide, emerald leaves shimmering in sun. We were whisked into serenity by the aroma of fresh green tea leaves. We wandered upon narrow pathways and found ourselves wandering through amazing care with which tea plants were cultivated.

We wandered the hours through these beautiful estates, learning how tea is made and sipping freshly brewed cups. One highlight of that visit was a tour of a local spice garden, where we learned the secrets behind Kerala's famous Ayurvedic remedies over aromas of cardamom and cinnamon. It was this smell which immediately transported me to an ancient world of traditions and healing practices. We stopped in a tiny glade, where men and women were busily pulling fresh shoots from the ground. Their hands moved quickly, and without miscalculation their scissors snipped off leaves with precision. I sat there in amazement as they showed how tea was manufactured from this raw material to become the delicious, wonderfully fragrant blend of a beverage so synonymous with life everywhere today.

There, under the tall trees, the long shadows of the afternoon sun created this ethereal atmosphere. As we sipped our fresh-brewed tea, I strongly felt a connection to this soil and its people. The rustling of leaves from the wind plus the soothing hum of the bees flying between flowers created a type of symphony of sounds that lulled me into a state of profound relaxation.

"Floating Through Paradise: Alleppey Backwaters"

After bidding farewell to the majestic mountains and cool climes of Munnar, we headed towards Alleppey, the coastal city known for its serene backwaters. Boarding the traditional houseboat, we glided through the rivers of Alleppey while calm waters slipped beneath the boat, where coconut groves and stilted villages appeared before us on the canvas of nature's artistry. Golden paddy fields stretched as far as the eye could see. Emerald waters made a beautiful hue in contrast to this golden landscape. Birds of all kinds were flitting across the sky, putting colorful splashes to our journey. The excitement mixed with much trepidation welled up inside me. Would the slow movement of this journey be worth the hype?

The sky began to pink up toward dusk, and shadows grew long across the water. By night we anchored in a secluded cove, bathed from above by twinkling stars and by soft moonlight from below. We watched with wonder as fishermen made their way home, overflowing nets full of their day's catch. The smooth lapping of waves on the hull lulled us into a peaceful reverie as lullingly as the sweet songs of crickets and the distant bark of a dog. And that was the place where we could relax fully with mother nature.

"Sun-Kissed Serenity: Varkala Beaches"

The last stop was Varkala, a beautiful beach town. The aromatic touch of the warm tropical air carried the sweet scent of saltwater and coconut husks, as we stepped off the train. A beach town in its laid-back character, Varkala epitomized Kerala. Now it was time to reach the fantastic Papanashini Beach, a place with towering cliffs and golden sand, inviting every soul to come closer to it. We walked along the shore, the thudding of waves against the rocks forming a soulful melody that seemed to wash away all troubles; its golden sands stretching invitingly towards the turquoise waters of the Arabian Sea.

The day unwound lazily with the bright sun overhead. We spent hours on the beach lounging around, watching surfers ride the waves and little children playing in the shallow waters. We finally decided to take a little short hike along the cliffs, which would be panoramic views of this coastline. We settled in for a quite laid-back evening with the sun going down and long shadows cast on the sand. The sky painted a kaleidoscope of pinks, oranges, and purples above us. Every destination had reflected some different aspect of this state which was so enticing -from peaceful tea plantations to placid backwaters, and then from the spiritual temples to the beaches.

It is indeed God's Own Country – the name for Kerala.

That is what the very first words at the entrance of Kerala say.

It is because of its natural beauty, rich cultural heritage, and warm hospitality that I still keep visiting this place and would love to in the future. As I reflect on this journey, I realize sometimes the greatest moments are experienced through slowing down and getting absorbed in the simplicity of life: the warmth of a cup of tea with mist in the mountains, a cruise through the backwaters as the sun sets, or an unhurried tramp along a virgin beach.

"Reflections on Paradise Found"

Reflecting on my journey from Nagpur to Kerala, I would say it has much to give. From the rolling tea plantations of Munnar to the quiet backwaters of Alleppey and the sun-kissed beaches of Varkala, each gave an insight into Kerala's natural beauty and rich cultural heritage.

This journey made me learn the importance of slowing down and appreciating the simple things in life. It made me remember that sometimes the most important moments come in accepting what is and letting myself be consumed by the splendor of nature and its connections with humankind.

Returning home, I carry in my heart the memories of lush landscapes, vibrant cultures, and warm people who welcomed me with open arms. Thus, an unforgettable journey through Kerala has left me with a memory from within my heart.
